1) Winners of the Overall Awards (First, Second, Third) will not be eligible for other
awards, althought their accomplishments will be listed.
2) To even up the point allocations between the volunteer and racing totals, your finish
place in both series will be calculated and then added together.
For example, if you finished 2nd in racing and 12th in volunteering, your total for overall
would be 2 + 12 or 14. In the event of a tie, total points from the two series will be
used as it was in 2007. |
In the past, this series has rewarded the runners who both attended large numbers of club races and who did well in their age groups. But, the Dallas Running Club is more than just winning races. It is also about a group of dedicated volunteers who work to allow all runners and their families to enjoy the sport of running. It’s about having fun and about staying active.
With that in mind, the City Championship Series (CCS) honors three champions: a Race Champion, a Volunteer Champion and an Overall Champion. The Race Champion will be similar to the traditional CCS scoring where you need to run the races and finish high in your age group while also volunteering a little. The Volunteer Champion will look to reward the runners who in addition to running a minimum number of races, also constantly give of their time through volunteer efforts for the Dallas Running Club. Lastly, an overall Club Champion will be awarded based on using both criteria.
The overall description above was easy. The harder part is to list out how the racing points and volunteering points will be counted to figure the champions.
The first component necessary for either Champion
is participation. To be eligible to win either Championship, the runner first must be a member of the Dallas Running Club. They must also compete in at least 4 club races and must volunteer at the club races. Volunteering will be looked at a little differently than in the past. A runner must either volunteer at a job that requires him/her to miss the race OR the runner must volunteer at 2 (two) club races that they also run in. For example, when you help with registration, you can most often also run the race too. However, if you volunteer at a water stop, then you have to miss the race. Only the free monthly club races count towards the participation requirement. Here are the specific details for the Participation Element of the CCS:
Race Participant: (Minimum of 4 races)
- 10 points per race. Any timed race during the eligible club races is eligible
Race Volunteer: (Minimum of 20 Volunteer Points)
- 10 points for a club race you compete in
- 20 points for a club race you do not run in
Minimum Participation Points Requirement:
- 70 total points with at least 40 from racing and 20 from volunteering.
- In 2006, if you volunteered for 1 race and ran 5 others, you were eligible. Now, while that runner is still eligible, the person who ran 4 but volunteered at 2 different races OR the person who could only attend 4 total races so raced all 4 and volunteered at 3 of them would also be eligible.
FOR A RUNNER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR ANY CITY CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES AWARD, HE/SHE MUST MEET THIS PARTICIPATION ELEMENT.
To determine
the CCS Racing Champion, first, only DRC members
who meet the Participation Element will be
considered. From
that pool of eligible runners, only the racing
points will be looked at. As in years past,
more points will be awarded the higher you finish
in your age group. In addition though, we
are incorporating a number of suggestions from
the runners on changes they would like to see. Three
major changes from the past are (1) monthly non-featured
races that are scored will count some towards
the racing championship, but at a lower amount,
(2) only your top 6 results will be included and
(3) the size of your age group (your competition)
will factor into your points. Here are
the specific for figuring the Race Champion:
The total from the following will be used to determine the CCS Racing Champion. While each race will be scored using the method below, only the top 6 races will be included in each runner’s score.
Race Participant:
- 10 points per race. Any timed race at the eligible club races is eligible.
Featured Race Bonus:
- 5 points for each race run that is the monthly featured distance.
Finishing Points (One Award based on position of finish):
- Overall Winner: 13 points
- Master Winner: 12 points
- Age Group Winner/Finisher: (Points based on the size of your age group)

Clarification for specific races:
- For the Club Relay event, all entrants will receive an additional 5 Finishing points in lieu of the table above.
- For the Handicap Race, the scoring age groups will mirror the handicapping groups in the event those do not line up with the traditional age groups.
Race Champions will be calculated separately for Men and Women.
To repeat, the scoring above will be done for each race (participation, feature race bonus and finishing points) and the runner’s 6 (six) highest scoring events will count towards the Race Championship Awards.
These
awards are new and really designed to emphasis
the other aspect of the Dallas Running Club,
that these races and events are possible through
the work of volunteers. While the core
volunteering points will come from club races,
members will earn volunteer points for all other
club activities that rely on volunteers to be
successful. We will be relying upon the
honesty of members and looking to the various
volunteer leaders to assist in tracking these
volunteer efforts. Here are the specifics
for measuring the Volunteer Champion:
Race Volunteer (This is for the eligible club races):
- 10 points for a club race you compete in
- 20 points for a club race you do not run in
Other Events:
This includes, but is not limited to, the following type of activities:
- Other club races such as The Half, The White Rock ‘n’ Roll 5 Mile, and the Trinity River Levee Top Run.
- Club activities such as the Annual Picnic, the Christmas Party or producing the Newsletter.
- Sponsored events such as the volunteer station at the White Rock Marathon, Lake Clean-Up activities, etc.
The Team leader will record hours for the event and points given as follows:
- 3 points per hour for each hour worked
- 10 bonus points for being in a volunteer leadership position.
Volunteer activities which follow The Half each year, will contribute towards the following year’s Volunteer Championship. This is necessary so awards can be determined and presented at the annual Christmas party.
The Volunteer Championship will not be looked at gender-specific.
To
find the Overall City Championship Series
Champion, the score of both the Running and
Volunteer Championships will be used. The best representative
of our club is someone who not only excels at
the races but also excels behind the scenes
and helps make the events happen. By
looking at both elements, our club champion
will be this person. Specifically, here
is how this will occur:
- The calculations shown above for the Race Championship and the Volunteer Championship will be used in determining the overall champion.
- For each Championship, the scores will be sorted and ranked, with the highest score getting one point, second highest two points, and so forth. This ranking will not be split by gender but will be done for all members together.
- The two rankings for each member will be averaged to produce his/her Overall Championship Score. The lower the score, the better the finish
At
this point, we are looking to award a series
of prizes to recognize all levels of achievement. The
current suggestion is as follows: Top prizes
will go to the top 3 finishers in the Overall
Championship. For the Race Championship,
awards will be given for the top 5 finishers
in both the Men and Women Divisions. For
the Volunteer Championship, the top 10 overall
finishers will receive awards. Lastly,
Participation Awards will be presented to remaining
others who met the Participation Element of
the City Championship Series but did not win
another prize. If you have any thoughts
into type of awards, please let us know and
we will consider it.
