With about 40 Dallas Running Club members and friends, the Dallas Running Club again provided a fun themed aid station this year at Mile 16 for all those who ran Wellstone's Dallas White Rock Marathon on December 10, 2006.
Armed with coffee, hot chocolate, tea, as well as donuts, bagels, and all sorts of breakfast goodies, the volunteers began arriving at the aid station at 6 am. The Mile 16 aid station is conveniently located at Sunset Bay at White Rock Lake, which is also the location of the Dallas Running Club's clubhouse -- giving us a nice place to hide out from the cold to enjoy that coffee as we set up. We began set-up under the direction of our fearless leaders, Nancy Ruder and "Blackie" Blaquiere.
To greet the runners, pre-school students from Dallas North Montessori School had created murals of racers, which we set up along the course.
With about 40 volunteers, we had a well-manned station. So well-manned in fact that when we heard that only a couple people had showed up to do the Mile 17 aid station at Winfrey Point, we of course sent some of our volunteers down there to help out!
We handed out Clif shots and bars supplied by the Dallas Running Club as the runners approached the aid station. Water and gatorade was readily available next, and to finish up we had a candy table, with licorice, lollipops, jelly beans, and other high sugar treats (again supplied by the Dallas Running Club) to help a runner get over their "bonk".
As the flow of runners slowed around lunchtime, several volunteers worked to prepare a great lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers for our tired corps of volunteers. Clean-up was much quicker than set-up of course, and the rain waited to really start until we had everything packed up and people were leaving - whew! While somewhat tiring, it was a fun time for all the volunteers to get to know their fellow club members a little better and cheer on other DRC members and runners!

"While running the marathon this past Sunday, the jelly bean platter at Mile 16 actually "saved me". Sure, I was in massive slowdown mode at that point, but without the unexpected treat, the second half of the race would have been much worse."
