The Dallas Running Club recently met with The White Rock Lake Conservancy, Inc. (WRLC) regarding their efforts to raise money for the installation of a security camera system at White Rock Lake Park. WRLC is seeking to raise $95,000 for the installation of six cameras and the relay equipment necessary to allow the Dallas Police Department to monitor activity at key locations around the lake. This is an excellent opportunity for us to give back to the community and to the lake that we have all enjoyed throughout the years as a member of the Dallas Running Club or as a patron of the lake. To spearhead this effort, the DRC Board of Directors has voted to match the first $5000 of contributions to stimulate the club’s goal to raise at least $10,000 for this noble effort. With over 3000 members we are confident that even the smallest contribution will help us reach this goal. Let’s show the power of our club and the love for our lake by being part of this great cause. Thank you for your consideration!

Did you know:
- The WRLC was formed earlier this year at the request of the Dallas Park & Recreation Dept. (DPARD) to become the major fund-raising organization for the park.
- White Rock Lake is one of five ‘signature parks’ in Dallas, i.e. parks that have an area-wide appeal vs. a local, neighborhood park. The others are the Zoo, the Arboretum, Fair Park, and Turtle Creek/Katy Trail Corridor. Those four parks have had major fund-raising organizations for many years, while White Rock Lake has not.
- The short term goals of the WRLC are to create the safest park in Dallas, to rebuild the Dreyfus Club, and to complete the trail project on the east side of the lake.
- Since DPARD has 400 parks in the system, it would be financially impossible to have the city pay for security cameras at the lake. If they did, all the other 399 park user groups would demand the same treatment. That is why a private fund-raising effort is necessary.
- Security experts say that 80% of the deterrent for potential criminals is the presence of signs that state that they will be monitored. The six cameras won’t cover the entire park, but they will be placed in parking areas that have the greatest amount of break-in of motor vehicles (BMV) which is the most significant crime committed in the park.
